Japan to host 6th World Assembly for Women

Tokyo, 7 September 2022 (TDI): Japan will host the 6th World Assembly for Women (WAW) by the end of 2022. Moreover, it will also observe WAW weeks from next month.

The 6th WAW was previously postponed due to the pandemic. Therefore, it will be held this year. The government of Japan will announce the theme of this year’s WAW soon.


WAW Weeks

The Government of Japan has announced WAW weeks to commence from 3rd October 2022 to 5th February 2023. During these weeks, many side events will also take place.

The government of Japan has also started registrations for the side events to be held from next month. The events will promote gender equality and women empowerment in different domains of the world.

They will also highlight different gender-related movements taking place around the globe. Additionally, the events will emphasize women’s role in different fields of International Affairs.

6th World Assembly for Women 

The World Assembly for Women will officially take place on December 3, 2022, in Tokyo. During the WAW, participants will highlight various gender-related topics which have become apparent during the pandemic.

Further, it will also address issues related to gender inequality in world affairs. The Government of Japan has been hosting WAW since 2014. It is an international conference that highlights women’s role.

Under these conferences, Japan extends its efforts aimed at realizing gender equality and advancing women’s empowerment.

World Assembly for Women 2019

The last WAW Conference took place in 2019. It commenced on the 23rd of March and lasted till the 24th of March 2019, in Tokyo.

The main theme of the event was “WAW! for Diversity.” Speakers from 27 countries and 3 international organizations attended the event.

During the Conference, discussions on different gender-related topics took place. Additionally, the Conference focused on technological innovation and human resource development” and “local revitalization and job creation”.

It also highlighted “diversity in media and content that promote diversity,” “women’s participation and conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and reconstruction,” and “diversity and corporate management”.

Many distinguished guests participated in the Conference including Malala Yusufzai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Gabriela Michetti, Former Vice President of Argentina.

Moreover, female Foreign Ministers of seven countries namely Panama, Dominica, Honduras, Bulgaria, Croatia, Guatemala, and Austria also attended the 5th WAW Conference.
