Japan-Peru strengthen bilateral relations

Tokyo, 2 September 2023 (TDI): The Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa met with his Peruvian counterpart Ana Cecilia Gervasi on September 1, 2023, during the latter’s visit to Japan.

The meeting of the two foreign ministries took place on the Peruvian navy sailing vessel “Unión” which has been anchored at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal since August 30, 2023.

Before the meeting, Minister Hayashi warmly welcomed the Peruvian Foreign Minister Grevasi and expressed his delight that both countries had the opportunity for reciprocal visits this year.

Furthermore, this year also marks the 150th anniversary of Japan-Peru diplomatic relations.

Minister Hayashi also expressed his appreciation for the signing of two significant agreements including the Memorandum of Cooperation on Antarctic Research and the Memorandum of Cooperation on Diplomatic Training.

The two ministers shared their perspective that both countries being significant strategic partners with shared values ​​and principles, can enhance their collaboration in various domains.

This includes supporting international law and order and having strong economic cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

They also committed to promoting cultural exchanges with people-to-people exchange and collaborating on the Applied Power Electronic Conference (APEC) 2024, which will be chaired by Peru.

In addition, both foreign ministers also reiterated the significance of the Nikkei community.

Minister Gervasi acknowledged Japan’s recent discharge of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) treated water into the ocean. Minister Hayashi clarified Japan’s stance by referring to the IAEA’s evaluation as outlined in its comprehensive report.

During the meeting, the ministers also discussed several global and regional matters such as the Ukraine war and situations in East Asia, and Latin America.

Additionally, they emphasized the significance of international cooperation and supporting a free and rule-based world order.
