Tehran, 26 August 2023 (TDI): In a historic stride, Iran solidified its position as a global player by securing permanent membership within the BRICS alliance.
Particularly announcement, made by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during this year’s BRICS summit in Johannesburg, brought together six new nations – Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – into the fold.
Additionally for Iran, this achievement is hailed as a “strategic victory” and a testament to its assertive foreign policy.
Iran’s ascent to BRICS marks a significant diplomatic achievement, especially amid escalating tensions with the United States and the ongoing stalemate concerning the 2015 nuclear deal.
President Ebrahim Raisi, a key participant in the 15th BRICS summit, emphasized the bloc’s status as a rising global power and vowed to strengthen collaborations with fellow member states.
The BRICS grouping, which already commands 23 percent of the world’s GDP and represents 42 percent of the global population.
As Iran’s strategic geographic location, substantial energy reserves, advanced technological prowess, and youthful workforce contribute to its value as a “reliable and influential” partner within BRICS.
Of particular significance to Iran is the initiative for de-dollarization, championed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The summit’s resolution to explore pathways toward trading in local currencies underscores a shared commitment among BRICS members to reduce reliance on the US dollar in global trade.
Moreover, Iran’s entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) further bolsters its international standing.
In addition, the SCO’s vast reach spanning Moscow to Beijing encompasses nearly half of the world’s population, offering Iran a platform for enhanced regional cooperation and economic integration.
President Raisi’s resounding endorsement of BRICS’ efforts in de-dollarization, economic collaboration, and financial settlement mechanisms reinforces Iran’s dedication to reshaping global economic dynamics.

During his address, Raisi conveyed his nation’s readiness to contribute its extensive abilities and resources to assist the group in achieving its objectives. He also highlighted obstacles like “contradictory global tendencies, unilateral approaches, nationalist biases, sanctions, and forceful economic measures.
