Iranian President Pezeshkian to Arrive in Islamabad Tomorrow

Islamabad (TDI): Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Islamabad tomorrow for a two-day official visit, according to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Friday.

This will be President Pezeshkian’s first trip to Pakistan since taking office, and comes at a time when both nations are looking to inject fresh energy into their long-standing, but often under-leveraged, bilateral relationship.

The Iranian leader will be accompanied by a high-profile delegation, including Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, several senior ministers, and top government aides.

During his stay, he is scheduled to hold separate meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Delegation-level discussions are also on the agenda, with an emphasis on regional affairs, trade, and cross-border cooperation.

In a statement earlier this week, Mehdi Sanai, a senior adviser to President Pezeshkian, hinted that the visit would include interactions with business leaders and cultural figures as well, calling the bilateral relationship “deep and multidimensional.”

Officials say the focus will also be on increasing bilateral trade, which currently hovers around $3 billion, and strengthening provincial and border-level ties.

This visit was initially scheduled for the last week of July but was postponed due to scheduling changes on both sides. When it goes ahead on Saturday, Pezeshkian will become the second Iranian president to visit Pakistan in two years.

His predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi, made a landmark three-day visit to Pakistan in April 2024, just a few weeks before his tragic death in a helicopter crash in Iran.

Earlier this year, in May 2025, PM Shehbaz Sharif also traveled to Tehran as part of a diplomatic outreach tour. That trip was seen as a gesture of appreciation for Iran’s support during the recent Indo-Pak military conflict.
