Samarkand, 15 September 2022 (TDI): The Republic of Iran signed the document on Iran’s accession to Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The document was signed by the Foreign Minister of Iran, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and Zhang Ming, Secretary General of the SCO, on Thursday.

Remarks by Iran’s Foreign Minister
After signing the document, the Iranian Foreign Minister highlighted that “recently all the documents related to finalizing Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization were approved by the Council of Ministers.”
He added that all documents have also been sent to the Iranian Parliament for review and legal procedures.
Further, the Secretary General of the SCO, Zhang Ming remarked that “today is an important day for the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, so, I congratulate Iran’s membership in the organization as well as my colleagues and friends.”
He further said, “The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the region as a powerful country with stability and security is important for the organization. Iran’s membership in the SCO will strengthen and promote this organization.”
Along with the Iranian Foreign Minister, the President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi is also visiting Uzbekistan to attend the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO. The meeting is being held in Samarkand.
Shanghai Cooperation Organization
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an economic, political, and security organization in the Eurasian region. It was founded by China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in 2001.
The official charter of the organization was signed in July 2022 and SCO entered into force in September 2003. Pakistan and India also became members of the organization in 2017.
The SCO is managed by its top-making decision body, the Heads of State Council (HSC), which holds meetings every year. Moreover, the organization consists of two other bodies named SCO Heads of Government Council and SCO Foreign Ministers Council respectively.
