Riyadh (TDI): Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, marking the first official contact between Saudi Arabia and Iran since the onset of the recent regional conflict.

According to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers discussed recent developments and explored ways to reduce tensions in order to restore stability and security across the region.

The call comes shortly after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire involving the United States and Israel, which has helped pause escalating hostilities in the wider region.

Following the ceasefire, Prince Faisal also held separate telephone conversations with foreign ministers from several regional countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkiye, and Jordan, reflecting coordinated regional diplomacy in the aftermath of the truce.

Saudi Arabia welcomed the ceasefire and expressed hope that it would pave the way for a broader and more lasting de-escalation. The foreign ministry emphasized the importance of strengthening regional security and avoiding actions that could undermine the sovereignty and stability of states in the Gulf.

Riyadh also reiterated its call to halt attacks on regional countries and stressed the need to ensure the safe and open functioning of key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor.

In addition, Saudi Arabia commended diplomatic efforts by regional actors aimed at securing the ceasefire, including the role played by Pakistan’s leadership in facilitating the temporary truce.
