Iran, Kazakhstan to Fast-Track North-South Corridor Development

Avaza (TDI): Iran and Kazakhstan have agreed to deepen their transport cooperation, aiming to improve regional connectivity through the eastern route of the North-South Corridor.

The agreement came during a meeting between Iranian Roads and Urban Development Minister Farzaneh Sadegh and Kazakh Transport Minister Nurlan Sauranbayev, held on the sidelines of the 3rd UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Turkmenistan’s port city of Avaza.

Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref was also present at the event.

Minister Sadegh emphasized the need to speed up regional transit projects, particularly the eastern branch of the corridor, an initiative led by Kazakhstan in coordination with neighboring countries.

She stressed the urgency of implementing a previously signed multilateral agreement involving deputy transport ministers from Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.

Both sides also explored ways to strengthen multimodal transport links.

A proposal was tabled to develop a detailed five-year plan outlining bilateral transport cooperation.

Kazakhstan’s minister welcomed the suggestion and expressed readiness to further facilitate Iranian air traffic within his country.

The move is seen as a significant step towards enhancing economic and logistical integration between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf, offering landlocked countries greater access to global trade routes.
