Ahsan Iqbal Urges Permanent Legislative Body for Islamabad

Islamabad (TDI): Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said on Thursday that a permanent legislative body for Islamabad was a must to address the city’s legislative challenges effectively.

“The legislative body can either be in the form of a provincial assembly or a council,” he said while chairing a meeting at the Ministry of Planning.

Iqbal said the lack of legislation was Islamabad’s fundamental problem which needed to be addressed immediately.

He further stressed the importance of defining clear administrative authority and ensuring efficient governance and management.

Iqbal stressed that like India, the federal capital should have a formal governance model that guarantees the presence of a central body to oversee the city’s administration.

The minister stressed that Islamabad should also have a structured waste management system for the suburbs to resolve the issue of waste collection.

He advocated for the establishment of a central authority capable of effective accountability, ensuring transparency and good governance.

Iqbal also proposed an institutional mechanism resilient to frequent transfers of officers and administrators, aiming to maintain consistent operations and effective management.

He added that the central governance body should remain unaffected by changes in the federal government.

“This will ensure stability and continuity in the administrative processes of the capital,” he added.
