Islamabad, 10 May 2023 (TDI): Secretary Antony J. Blinken of the United States and Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom James Cleverly convened a joint press to address the recent global issues, including the arrest of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and reports of associated violence.
Both diplomats stressed their commitment to upholding the rule of law, democratic principles, and the importance of a peaceful transition of power.
Secretary Blinken emphasized the significance of supporting the rule of law and adhering to constitutional values in Pakistan. He says, “We just want to make sure that whatever happens in Pakistan is consistent with the rule of law, with the constitution.”
Foreign Secretary Cleverly reiterated the UK’s long-standing and solid partnership with Pakistan while recognizing the headlines surrounding the events.
James Cleverly states, “The UK has a longstanding and close relationship with Pakistan. We are Commonwealth partners. We want to see peaceful democracy in that country. We want to see the rule of law adhered to.”
Secretary Blinken and Foreign Secretary Cleverly recognized the essence of a peaceful and stable Pakistan, echoing their shared dedication to supporting democratic institutions and processes.
They also underlined the significance of an inclusive political environment that respects the rights and freedoms of all citizens. Furthermore, they reiterated their support for the people of Pakistan in their pursuit of a prosperous and democratic future.

The international organizations share similar concerns and are closely monitoring the situation. Farhan Haq, Antonio Guterres’ deputy spokesperson, underscored the United Nations’ commitment to ensuring that all political parties in Pakistan are treated fairly and that due process is followed. Haq said, “We will monitor this process to make sure our concerns are being addressed.
In response to the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the European Union also underlined the significance of patience and cool-headedness in these challenging and turbulent times.
The EU acknowledges that only genuine dialogue conducted under the law and by Pakistanis themselves will be able to address Pakistan’s challenges.
