Indonesian President meets his South Korean counterpart

Seoul, 29 July 2022 (TDI): The Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, met with South Korean President, Yoon Suk-Yeol, on 28 July.

The meeting was held at the Yongsan Presidential Office in Seoul. The Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, also accompanied the Indonesian president.

The two presidents had a detailed discussion on enhancing bilateral trade. President Jokowi and President Yoon also agreed to increase the cooperation in the labor force. Along with this, the cooperation between the Republic of Korea and ASEAN was also discussed. Moreover, the upcoming G20 summit in Indonesia was also part of the talks.

Regional Tour of Indonesian President

This was the last leg of the regional tour of the Indonesian President. He started his tour from China on 25 July, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. In this visit, the Indonesian first lady also met the wife of President Xi, Peng Liyuan.

After China, President Jokowi went to Japan. He also held meetings with Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan and the emperor of Japan. Now, he is concluding his tour by visiting South Korea.

This is the second visit of any foreign leader since president Yoon assumed office. The first lady of Indonesia, Iriana Joko Widodo, also accompanies the Indonesian president.

The two leaders vowed to support the restoration of democracy in Myanmar. The presidents addressed a press conference where the two agreed to increase strategic cooperation and enhance the supply chains.

In defense, the two presidents praised the spectacular maiden flight KF-21 fighter jet. The KF-21 jet production is a joint project of Indonesia and South Korea.

They reiterated their willingness to work together until the jet project is completed. Hence, Indonesia is the sole member of the ASEAN with a unique cooperative alliance with South Korea.
