Islamabad, 17 September 2021(TDI): Ambassador of Indonesia to Pakistan, Adam Mulawarman Tugio, during his visit to Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) stressed that the Pakistan business community should prioritize enhancing trade and exports with ASEAN, as it is a wide market and will provide profitable results for the economy of two sides.

While comparing the bilateral trade of ASEAN-China (around USD 600 billion) and ASEAN-Pakistan (USD 6 billion), the ambassador highlighted that ASEAN-Pakistan trade is uninfluential. He suggested Pakistan grow cooperation with Indonesia in order to access ASEAN countries’ highly unused markets.

Adam also noted commonalities between Indonesia and Pakistan, which can be used to achieve mutual economic advantages in various fields, such as IT, e-commerce, and tourism. He also encouraged the participation of the Pakistani business community in the upcoming virtual expo organized by Indonesia.

While talking about boosting bilateral relations, the ambassador also recommended that the education sectors of Pakistan should encourage manuscripts on the economic potential of the ASEAN region. Besides this, he emphasized organizing trade shows, foster JVs between the private departments of both countries and homegrown technologies and industries. 

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI), agreed with the Ambassador’s opinion on ASEAN-Pakistan bilateral economic cooperation and expressed the readiness of ICCI to work with the Embassy of Indonesia in students’ exchange and business investment.

The President ICCI pointed out trade between the two countries, which is around $2.5 billion, and urged the two sides to mutually benefit by enhancing cooperation in exploring the untapped markets of ASEAN.

The meeting was attended by Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan and Adam Mulawarman Tugio, along with Fatma Azim Senior Vice President ICCI, Omais Khattak, Muhammad Shakir, Ashraf Farzand, Abbas Hashmi, Shaukat Hayat, Khalid Chaudhry, and others.
