June 7, 2021 (TDI): Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Chongqing. Wangi Yi recognized the great importance of China’s relations with Indonesia from a strategic perspective. The high level of mutual trust between the two was demonstrated several times due to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi’s visits to China since the outbreak of COVID-19. The two sides held an inaugural meeting of the China-Indonesia High-level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism in Guiyang where they achieved five important consensuses.
First, they decided to consolidate strategic solidarity to ensure a community with a shared future. It was agreed that the two countries will support the efforts of one another towards national development, regional peace and stability. Second, they aimed for greater cooperation in terms of healthcare amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Both will continue to strengthen their cooperation in the industrial sector, especially in the research and development of vaccines. Third, they will work together towards advancement in mutual aid under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It was agreed that the two sides will work mutually for the early harvest of the ‘Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor’. Fourth, they expressed willingness to expand their maritime cooperation. The cooperation mechanism has been upgraded by the new Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Cooperation signed by both countries. At last, they settled on enhancing cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
In addition to the aforementioned prospects, Indonesia’s coordinator for cooperation with China, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, as well as Wang Yi agreed that China and Indonesia’s cooperation in numerous fields has achieved rapid progress and they should push for new advancement in the bilateral relations.
