2022 AU Extraordinary Summit will take place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea from May 25 to 28, 2022.

Malabo, 25 May 2022 (TDI): The coming AU Extraordinary Summit will take place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea from May 25 to 28, 2022.

As an advanced part of the agenda before the opening ceremony of the summit, the STC meeting on Migration, Refugees, Returnees, and Internally Displaced Persons has already been held in Malabo from May 23 to 24 this week.

AU Extraordinary Summit in 2022

The 2022 AU Extraordinary Summit has a sub-title as Humanitarian and Pledging Conference. This year, in the context of complex global geopolitical situations, African countries have to work together more than ever.

Meanwhile, the economic and social recovery from COVID-19 is another heated and urgent topic across the continent. Therefore, only with robust humanitarian capacities and adequate resources, can the African continent fully cope with the humanitarian crises.

The whole agenda for the AU Extraordinary Summit this year contains four main parts. Initially, the STC meeting on Migration, Refugees, Returnees, and Internally Displaced Persons will take place from May 23 to 24.

Followed by the STC meeting, the Meeting of the Executive Council will sign the official opening ceremony of the summit on May 25. Afterward, the Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and Pledging Conference will be on the scene on May 27.

Last but not least, the Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government will mark the closing of the 20th AU Extraordinary Summit on May 28, 2022.

STC Meeting Before the Summit

The term STC refers to the Specialized Technical Committee. The STC meeting that happened before the summit is the 4th Ordinary Session of STC on Migration, Refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons.

Officers from the African Union Commission Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS), Government Representatives from Equatorial Guinea, and Ministers from the African Union Member States also attended the meeting.

This meeting focused on validating an important legal instrument. The instrument is one that can contribute to the operationalization of the African Humanitarian Agency and migration governance.

Moreover, the meeting also discussed how to enhance collaboration with diversified partnerships and resources both inside and outside the continent. Furthermore, the STC meeting is also responsible to prepare for the summit which will come very soon.
