Mexico City, 13 September 2022 (TDI): The officials from Mexico and Guatemala held the 20th Meeting of the Migratory and Consular Affairs Group, on Tuesday.
Migratory and Consular Affairs Group
The 20th Meeting Mexico-Guatemala Migratory and Consular Affairs Group was conducted at the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico. The bilateral dialogue mechanism helped both sides to put light on numerous collective issues.
Furthermore, the platform was established in 1987. Since then, 19 meetings have been held out of which the last one was held in 2016.
The 20th session was headed by senior officials of each side. Maximiliano Reyes Zúñiga, the Undersecretary of Affairs of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Foreign Ministry, represented Mexico during the meeting. Deputy Foreign Minister Geovani Castillo Polanco represented the Guatemalan side.
In addition, officials from the ministries, public offices, and the state’s industrial and banking corporations in Mexico were also present at the meeting. The bilateral talks held by the two sides focused on the implementation of agreements that were signed by the Presidents of Guatemala and Mexico.
The most important aspect that came into the discussion was upholding the human rights of migrants. Moreover, there was also an agreement on the taking of joint action for promoting safe and circular migration between the two countries.

Strengthening cooperation
The official of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, Martín B. Llorente added that this meeting is important for strengthening the relations. Furthermore, he also assured the cooperation between the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) and the National Council for Attention to Migrants of Guatemala.
Martín B. Llorente also added about the strengthening of cooperation in the provision of services to the migrants on a collective level.
Meeting with Guatemalan Ambassador
The Undersecretary of Mexico, Zúñiga also met with the Ambassador of Guatemala to Mexico, Marco Tulio Chicas.
During the meeting, the Mexican side appreciated the Guatemalan Ambassador for his service and professional behaviour. The two officials also agreed on strengthening the cooperation further between Mexico and Guatemala.
