Ghana Election: Former President John Mahama Regains Power

Accra (TDI): Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama has won the country’s presidential election, paving the way for his return to power.

His key opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, called Mahama to concede defeat on Sunday.

“The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility,” Bawumia said in his victory speech on Sunday.

Mahama’s win ended the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) two terms in power. During the NPP’s reign, the country witnessed the worst economic crisis in years, involving high inflation and a debt default.

According to the NDC spokesman Sammy Gyamfi, Mahama received 56.3 percent of the votes against his opponent Bawumia’s 41.3 percent.

“It is very clear the people of this country have voted for change,” Gyamfi added.

This will be Mahama’s second term as the president of Ghana. He served as the country head between July 2012 and January 2017.
