General Asim Munir visits United States

Washington, 16 December 2023 (TDI): Chief of Army Staff Pakistan, General Syed Asim Munir, on December 10th left on an official visit to the United States of America. He was also accompanied by Director General Inter-Services Intelligence Lt. General Nadeem Anjum. 

During his first visit to the US as the Chief of Army Staff, he was scheduled to meet the senior military and other government officials of the United States. 

General Asim, during his ongoing visit, met with the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, Secretary of Defense, General (Retd.) Llyod Austin, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown. 

Moreover, he also interacted with Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, and Deputy National Security Advisor, Jonathan Finer.

During the sessions of bilateral meetings, matters of mutual interest, global and regional security issues, and ongoing conflicts were discussed. 

The two countries agreed to continue engagement for exploring potential avenues of bilateral collaboration in pursuit of shared interest. 

In the meetings with the defense officials, matters of counter terrorism cooperation and collaboration in defense were highlighted as the key areas of cooperation. 

Both sides reiterated to increase the interaction and explore ways to expand the scope of mutually beneficial engagements. 

General Asim Munir identified the importance of understanding each other’s perspectives on regional security issues and developments affecting strategic stability especially in South Asia. 

Discussing the South Asian region, the importance of resolving the Kashmir issue in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and international law was a significant focus. 

In a reception hosted by Embassy of Pakistan, the Army Chief also engaged with the overseas Pakistani community.  

He appreciated the positive role the overseas community played in the country’s progress and development. 

During the interaction, diverse topics were part of the discussion. The Army Chief welcomed and encouraged the diaspora to invest through SIFC which is already yielding success in various dimensions.

General Asim highlighted that Pakistani diaspora anywhere around the world is held in high regard as they are ambassadors of Pakistan and contribute significantly to Pakistan across multiple domains. 

Members of the community expressed their pride in role and contributions of Pakistan Army towards well-being of Pakistan. 

During the interactions, Tanveer Ahmed, while meeting Army Chief, graciously donated 9 million dollars for NUST in IT development.
