Pakistan and US discuss situation in Afghanistan

Islamabad, 8 December 2023 (TDI): United States Special Representative on Afghanistan, Thomas West during his visit to Pakistan interacted with the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Jalil Abbas Jilani, on Thursday. 

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan, this week a series of visits by senior officials of the United States to Pakistan is taking place. 

The visits will feature Julieta Valls Noyes, Assistant Secretary for population, refugees, and migration. US Special Representative on Afghanistan, Tom West, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Elizabeth Horst are also visiting Pakistan. 

The visits are part of the ongoing dialogue with the United States across a broad range of issues including, but not limited to, the situation in Afghanistan. 

The Spokesperson ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan commented that Pakistan remains committed to sustained engagement and dialogue with the United States. 

During the meeting, Foreign Minister, Jalil Jilani, highlighted the importance of collective approaches to promote prosperity and development for the people of Afghanistan. 

The Foreign Ministry reaffirmed the commitment of Pakistan to engage and work with international partners for the development of Afghanistan. 

Earlier the day, Ambassador Tom West also engaged in a session with Asif Durrani, Special Representative of Pakistan on Afghanistan where both sides talked about the various issues in Afghanistan and the response of the international community over it. 

During their meeting, both sides emphasized the need for more coordination and cooperation in this regard. 

The series of meetings between officials of the two sides will provide an opportunity for both countries to exchange views about the situation in Afghanistan and issues related to it. 

Both sides shared their respective perspectives on developments that are taking place, including concerning the resettlement of Afghan nationals to the United States.

The discussion between officials of Pakistan and United States will broadly circle how the two countries can work together to develop confidence, enhance dialogue, and identify new areas of cooperation. 

Furthermore, the foreign office said that Pakistan is committed to further advancing and consolidating its dialogue with the United States.
