Ankara, 27 October 2023 (TDI): The President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, told Pope Francis over a phone call on Thursday that Israel’s attacks on Gaza amounted to a massacre, and that the international community’s silence over the attacks in Gaza was “embarrassing.”

According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, Erdogan said Israel’s attacks on Gaza, which are unjustified by any sacred text, have escalated to the point of a massacre, and that the international community should be ashamed to turn a blind eye towards the grievances of Palestinians.

Erdogan said that all nations must speak out against the regional humanitarian crisis, according to a statement by the Turkish presidency.

Furthermore, Erdogan told Pope Francis over the phone that the only way to maintain a lasting peace in the region that is sacred to all three Abrahamic religions is through the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and geographically contiguous Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem based on the 1967 borders.

He went on to emphasize Türkiye’s noteworthy efforts in providing Gaza with medical and humanitarian aid. In order to guarantee the continuous provision of aid to innocent civilians, he urged everyone to actively support these efforts.

President Erdogan has been outspoken about the rights of Palestinian people.

On the occasion of his Parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday, Erdogan termed Hamas as “liberators” who have armed themselves to “protect their lands and people”.

Food, water, medication, and fuel are running low for Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants, and the supplies that aid convoys that were recently permitted entry into Gaza brought in only a small portion of what is required.
