Paris, 1 September 2022 (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France paid tribute to the former president of the USSR and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev through a press release today.

The press release states,

“France pays tribute to the former president of the USSR and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev.

With courage and determination, he promoted freedom in Russia and the easing of tensions.

As a statesman, reformer, and man of dialogue, he personally helped bring a peaceful end to the Cold War.

France offers its condolences to his family, his loved ones and the Russian people”.

Who was Mikhail Gorbachev?

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was a Soviet politician who served as the last general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1985–91) as well as the last president of the Soviet Union (1990–91).

In 1991, the Soviet Union was dismantled and communism was defeated as a result of his efforts to democratize the political system and decentralize the economy of his nation.

Due to the significant role he played in ending the Soviet Union’s postwar domination of eastern Europe, Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1990.

Death of Mikhail Gorbachev

Mikhail Gorbachev died in Moscow on 31 August 2022, at the age of 91. His death was announced on Tuesday by Russia’s state news agencies, citing the city’s central clinical hospital. The reports said he had died after an unspecified “long and grave illness.”

According to a Russian state-owned media company RIA Novosti, he will be buried next to his wife at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
