New York, 22 September 2022 (TDI): State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi, met with the Foreign Minister of Portugal, Joao Gomes Cravinho, on the sidelines of the ongoing 77th session of the UNGA.

During the meeting, Wang Yi said that both countries enjoy warm relations. In addition, Yi said that the bilateral relations between the two countries are based on mutual understanding and mutual trust.

Wang Yi further added that both China and Portugal have advanced their practical cooperation while overcoming the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yi said that that exports of Portuguese agricultural and food products to China are growing rapidly.

In addition, cooperation between large companies from both sides and tripartite cooperation is progressing smoothly. Both countries are committed to practising true multilateralism, Wang Yi said.

Stronger partnership

The Foreign Minister of China said that “In the face of the turbulence and transformations in the international situation, China is willing to work with Portugal to jointly uphold the UN’s core role in international affairs, and promote the cause of human peace, development and progress.”

Wang Yi added, “China expects mutual understanding, mutual appreciation, peaceful coexistence and mutual learning with European countries, including Portugal, as well as respect for each other’s development path chosen on the basis of their respective historical and cultural legacy.”

For his part, Cravinho said that friendly exchanges between the two countries have lasted for centuries. Moreover, bilateral practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries has also developed fast.

Furthermore, Cravinho said China plays a critical role in addressing common challenges such as safeguarding security and tackling climate change.

In addition, the Foreign Minister of Portugal said that the country appreciates the positive role of China in promoting strategic dialogues and high-level exchanges. Towards the end, the two sides also exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine issue.
