Foreign Minister of Belgium and Ukraine meet

Prague, 31 August 2022 (TDI): Foreign Ministers of Belgium, Hadja Lahbib, and Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba met in Prague today during the Gymnich meeting.

The Foreign Minister of Belgium had a productive discussion with Dmytro Kuleba on Ukraine’s humanitarian and military situation, including the worrying developments at Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

Furthermore, both Foreign Ministers agreed to meet again in New York at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to discuss future common projects in Ukraine.

Belgium’s support for Ukraine

During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers of Belgium and Ukraine discussed the need for additional defense assistance for Ukraine. Minister Lahbib briefed Ukraine’s Foreign Minister on Belgium’s assistance in this regard.

Foreign Minister Lahbib said that recently 8 million euros in non-lethal assistance was provided to the Ukrainian armed forces by Belgium.

Moreover, Foreign inister Lahbib also praised Ukraine for attaining candidate status in June. Belgium is prepared to assist Ukraine in progressing toward full EU membership, particularly by enacting important changes, especially in the area of rule of law.

Additionally, Minister Lahbib explained her last year’s tour to Ukraine (Crimea). She visited the city of Sevastopol in Crimea in violation of Ukrainian legislation.

Minister Lahbib said that she has always advocated the validity of Crimea as an essential part of Ukraine. She also supported the integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine within its internationally acknowledged boundaries.

Minister Lahbib personally reassured the Ukrainian people of backing and Belgium’s commitment to helping bring peace and rebuild Ukraine. Moreover, she praised Belgium for its true and steadfast support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and for the contributions it makes in that direction.

To follow up on bilateral initiatives in Ukraine, the two Foreign Ministers decided to have their next meeting during the forthcoming UN General Assembly.
