Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka attends high-level meetings in Geneva

Geneva, 28 February 2022 (TDI): Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L Peiris visited Geneva, Switzerland where he attended bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva

The Foreign Minister and the Srilankan delegation attended some high-level meetings with the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Meeting with Ministers of the U.K, Central Asia, and the Commonwealth Lord

During the meeting with Ministers of the U.K, Central Asia, and the Commonwealth Lord, the Srilankan Minister of Foreign Affairs Minister Peiris talked about bilateral cooperation, progress achieved in reconciliation among Srilankan nationals, and the Government’s efforts to promote unity and harmony among the nation.

Meeting with OIC and the Commonwealth Secretariat 

The Srilankan delegation also held a productive meeting with Nassima Baghli, the Permanent Observer of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in which they discussed Srilanka’s amicable relations with OIC and the contributions of its Muslim community towards OIC.

Moreover,  at the meeting with Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, the minister discussed means of advancing Srilanka’s ties with the Commonwealth, including economic front, tourism, and job opportunities for youth.

United Nations Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system, it is made up of 47 States responsible for promoting and protecting all human rights around the globe.

Further, it can discuss all thematic human rights issues, and it has situations that require its attention throughout the year. It meets at the U.N. Office in Geneva.
