Islamabad, 13 October 2021 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, virtually attended the high- level meeting of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). It was hosted by Serbia, Belgrade to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the NAM’s First Conference held in 1961, also in Belgrade, in former Yugoslavia. The event took place from 11 to 12 October 2021.
The Minister highlighted the significance of the NAM as a multilateral organization working for peace and development in the world. He said the Organization had an essential role in countering global issues such as climate change and COVID-19 pandemic.
He reiterated the need for ensuring vaccine equity, adequate financing for development, clear investment strategies, and focus on eliminating the structural and systemic inequalities.
Created in 1961, NAM has sought to “create an independent path in world politics that would not result in member States becoming pawns in the struggles between the major powers.”
