Tashkent, 16 June 2023 (TDI): The European Union has committed to support the agricultural sector of Uzbekistan.
Given that June marks the beginning of summer’s harvest season in the country, it is the important time of the year when food supply chains become more rampant.
The European Union (EU), through Ambassador Charlotte Adriaen, the EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan, makes the commitment to support the Agri-food Sector of the country, stating that agriculture is the biggest part of the economy and is essential for Uzbek citizens.
During a formal interview, the EU Ambassador notes, “Agriculture is essential for everyone in Uzbekistan and this is why the EU is committed to supporting the agricultural sector in Uzbekistan.”
Charlotte Adriaen further stated that agriculture remains the biggest provider of jobs in Uzbekistan. However, the field has great potential to protect the land, the water, the soil, and the wildlife. Thus, it is important to provide adequate support to agriculture in Uzbekistan.
The Ambassador interview explains various mechanisms through which the EU’s support for the field of agriculture will be realized.
These include EU-dedicated expertise and training support for the Ministry of Agriculture, advisory, education, and research institutions, agri-businesses, farmers and others through the EU-funded ASK Facility.

The EU Ambassador also referenced Europe’s attempts in the past to improve agriculture by giving incentives to farmers and the opportunity to see what is most beneficial for their farming endeavours.
Similarly, Charlotte Adriaen submits that Uzbek farmers should be allowed to develop their businesses and support their families. Thereby reducing inequalities and allowing the farmers to experience fewer hurdles while also giving female farmers more opportunities.
A closing remark from the EU Ambassador shows the importance of ensuring nutrition quality in Uzbek food systems for the benefit of the people and exportation purposes.
