EU Ambassador, Law Minister Review Human Rights Progress in Pakistan

Islamabad (TDI): Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Raimundas Karoblis, called on Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Law and Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar.

In what was the inaugural meeting between the two, Minister Tarar welcomed the Ambassador, who has taken charge as the EU envoy earlier this month, and appreciated the European Union’s continued support for promoting and protecting human rights in Pakistan.

Both dignitaries reviewed progress under the “Promotion of Human Rights in Pakistan Phase II (EU Huqooq-e-Pakistan II)” program, launched in 2024 as an EU flagship initiative.

The Minister noted that the project is helping to strengthen governmental structures on human rights, enhance the capacity of National Human Rights Institutions, advance human rights education and sensitization, and encourage responsible business practices.

He also briefed the Ambassador on the comprehensive National Action Plan on Human Rights, which is being implemented with a focus on legal and policy reforms, access to justice, and strengthening of national institutions.

Ambassador Karoblis welcomed these initiatives and expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved under the program. He also emphasized the EU’s resolve to support Pakistan in advancing its human rights agenda.

The meeting also included discussions on preparations for the upcoming GSP+ Monitoring Mission in November 2025.

Ambassador Karoblis, who has earlier served as EU’s ambassador to Tajikistan, presented his credential to Pakistan’s President on September 10, after which he formally started his engagements.

Prior to the meeting with the Law Minister, the ambassador had already met Pakistan’s Finance Minister Aurangzeb and Secretary Economic Affairs Division, Humair Karim.

As institutionalizing human rights remains one of the top priorities of the European Union in Pakistan; alongside green inclusive growth, human capital development, and governance, the bloc’s mission in Pakistan closely work with the Human Rights and Law Ministry.
