Islamabad (TDI): The Embassy of Ethiopia in Islamabad and Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) have launched Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative on the university’s premises, while also agreeing to explore broader cooperation in education, research and institutional linkages.
Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Oumer H. Oba and AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood jointly launched the initiative on Thursday as part of efforts to promote friendship and strengthen people-to-people ties between Ethiopia and Pakistan.
The initiative was aimed at promoting Ethiopia-Pakistan friendship by planting the seedlings of fraternity for the Ethiopian Embassy Islamabad and the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU).
On the occasion, the Ambassador also held an interactive session with the faculty of the AIOU, highlighting the significance of the Green Legacy Initiative in curbing climate change, restoring forest area, ensuring food security and a green economy for the country.
The envoy gave a brief overview to the participants about Ethiopia’s historical relations with Pakistan, its fastest-growing economy, demographic dividends, culture and tourism potential.
He called for establishing institutional linkages to promote cooperation in areas of scientific and vocational education, joint research in agricultural sciences, and faculty and student exchange programs.
The Ambassador informed them about the educational revolution underway in Ethiopia, with a growing number of educational institutions and rising literacy rate in the country, and urged the academia to play its role in strengthening the two countries’ bilateral relations.

Vice Chancellor of the AIOU Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood praised the socio-economic development of Ethiopia, highlighting the longstanding relations between the two countries, and affirmed his commitment to promote bilateral educational cooperation between the two countries.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Pakistan to strengthen relations with friendly nations from Africa, including Ethiopia.

The two sides concluded the session with a firm resolve to carry forward the momentum in bilateral relations by establishing institutional linkages between the AIOU and its counterparts in Ethiopia.
