Ethiopia to Receive €40 Million in EU Humanitarian Assistance

BRUSSELS, (TDI): The European Union announced a €40 million ($41 million) aid package on Thursday to support humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia.

In a statement, the European Commission highlighted the “numerous challenges” faced by the Ethiopian people, including ongoing conflicts, the impacts of the climate crisis, and pandemics.

The funding will primarily target internally displaced individuals within Ethiopia and refugees from neighboring countries, such as Sudan.

With this latest package, the European Commission’s total humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia since 2020 has surpassed €436.5 million.

EU had been regularly funding Ethiopia in various crisis situations to help its emergency and other needs.
The European Union previously pledged a $680 million aid package for Ethiopia that was delayed due to a 2020-2022 civil war in its northern Tigray region.
Thousands died and millions were displaced becoming homeless in a two-year conflict between the government and regional forces from Tigray.
The conflict actually ended in November 2022. Restrictions on access to Tigray during the war forced many of its 5.5 million population to the brink of starvation, aid groups and the United Nations said.
