Embassy of Portugal to Participate in European Languages and Cultural Program

Lahore (TDI): The Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad will participate in the European Day of Languages celebrations in Lahore, on September 26-27, 2025.

The two‑day cultural and linguistic festival is co‑organized by the Annemarie‑Schimmel‑Haus (German Cultural Centre) and Alliance Française Lahore, with support from the EU Delegation, showcasing the rich tapestry of Europe’s linguistic diversity.

As part of this engagement, Portugal’s Ambassador Frederico Silva is scheduled to visit Forman Christian College, where he will lead an interactive session for students and faculty on “Portugal and Pakistan Bilateral Relations” and “Portuguese Language – A Global Voice.”

The ambassador will underscore the global relevance of Portuguese, a language spoken by over 260 million people worldwide, bridging communities across continents.

During his Lahore stay, Ambassador Silva is also expected to hold meetings with Punjab government ministers and engage with prominent cultural, business, and academic figures in the city.

These interactions aim to reaffirm Portugal’s commitment to cultural dialogue, inclusivity, and stronger bilateral relations with Pakistan.

The European Day of Languages, observed annually on 26 September, was launched by the Council of Europe and the European Union in 2001 to promote language learning and protect linguistic heritage.

The 2025 edition carries the theme “Languages open hearts and minds”, reflecting the transformative power of multilingualism in fostering intercultural understanding.

In past years, the event has included language workshops, cultural quizzes, performances, and interactive installations — all designed to highlight the connections between language, identity and cultural expression.

Earlier in 2025, Ambassador Silva participated in a roundtable on heritage conservation and intercultural communication in Lahore, jointly organized by Aga Khan Cultural Service – Pakistan, where he explored linkages in art, architecture and linguistic exchange.

These cultural initiatives come amid celebrations of 75 years of diplomatic ties between Portugal and Pakistan, marked by recent events in Islamabad attended by high‑level dignitaries and diplomacy efforts emphasizing trade, education, and cultural exchange.

The Pakistani diaspora in Portugal, counting tens of thousands, is also viewed as an important bridge in fostering people‑to‑people connections.
