Disney authorises Licensees to Pakistan

-

Geneva, 8 April 2022 (TDI): The American entertainment company, Walt Disney, has given its licensees and vendors authorization to get Disney-branded merchandise from Pakistan.

The news was announced on Twitter by the Ministry of Commerce. The tweet said Disney has “authorized its vendors & licensees to procure Disney-branded products from facilities in Pakistan that enrol and participate in the Better Work Program (BWP) w.e.f. 1st April 2022.”

Walt Disney is allowing Pakistani organizations that have registered with the Better Work Program to collaborate with them.

Pakistan’s government and the International Labour Organization have signed the Better Work Program Agreement.

Masood Khan, a Pakistani diplomat, and politician, revealed the news in a tweet. He urged Pakistani businesses and organizations to join the ‘Better Work Program’ in order to profit from Walt Disney’s global market share.

The Ministry of Commerce announced that an MoU had been signed between the Government of Pakistan and the International Labour Organization (ILO) to implement the Better Work Program in Pakistan. That is to say, this opportunity will allow sourcing from Pakistan & would contribute to the exports.

“We would like to thank ILO & Ministry of Human Resource Development for partnering with MOC,” said the Ministry of Commerce further in a statement.

Earlier, Walt Disney banned imports from Pakistan in 2014 after the US giant was not satisfied with the country’s governance requirements.

Pakistan had lost $200 million in textile exports due to the decision of Walt Disney. The judgment was made due to Pakistan’s inadequate enforcement of labor regulations.

Due to frequent factory fires at Textile garment factories, the US giant issued a stronger warning to Bangladesh and decided to place Pakistan on its watch list.

The agreement signed up for the ILO’s ‘Better Work Program will allow the government of Pakistan to close monitoring of the country for social audits as it was granted a waiver during the signing.

Pakistani business industry has expressed their disappointment with persons in the commerce industry who are, according to them, apathetic and irresponsible.
