Tehran, July 30, 2024 (TDI):  Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in as Iran’s new president on Tuesday in the presence of top-ranking political officials and foreign dignitaries during a ceremony held in the parliament.

The oath-taking ceremony followed the formal endorsement of the new president by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday.

It was attended by delegates from over 88 countries and key Iranian officials. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, also arrived in Tehran to attend the event.

Earlier, the Director General of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Seyed Rasoul Musavi, and the Ambassador of Pakistan to Iran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, received Dar at the Tehran Airport.

The deputy prime minister was leading Pakistan’s delegation in the absence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who had to pull out of the visit due to poor health.

“Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar will lead the Pakistan delegation at the inauguration/oath ceremony of the President-elect of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, to be held on July 30, 2024, in Tehran,” Pakistan’s foreign office said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“The visit attests to the commitment by the two countries to strengthen leadership-level engagement and bilateral cooperation,”  the statement added.

Dr. Masoud won a runoff election on July 5 against his ultraconservative opponent Saeed Jalili to replace President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
