The British Minister of Defense Ben Wallace, the Ukrainian Minister of Defence Oleksii Reznikov, and the Danish Minister of Defence Morten Bødskov hosted the conference on Thursday.
The Danish Minister of Defence, Morten Bødskov, announced at the meeting that over 1.5 million euros cash have been donated by UK, Norway and Denmark combined and “it will grow” in future.
The commitment came after the Ukrainian authorities asked the West for additional military assistance and long-range artillery earlier this year, following the Russian initiation of war against Ukraine in February 2022.
The money is for enhancing armaments production, including artillery and ammunition, developing and strengthening the training of Ukrainian soldiers, and assisting Ukraine’s efforts to demine areas.
Cooperation in the Defense Contact Group
According to Morten Bødskov, “the conference supplements the cooperation in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group regarding support to Ukraine.”
The Defense Contact group involves more than 45 countries that provide urgent military equipment to deter Russian aggression.
In that context, the meeting of the 26 nations aimed to “strengthen the long-term support to Ukraine with discussions about how we will be able to strengthen financing, weapon production, training and demining.”
“All the countries that came to Copenhagen came with the intention of supporting Ukraine,” Danish Defense Minister Morten Bødskov said at the conference.
Moreover, the countries at the meeting condemned Russia’s brutality and indiscriminate killing of Ukrainian civilians and expressed their full support for Ukraine.
They agreed on “the importance of continued and sustained military assistance to Ukraine in its fight for security and freedom.”
