Brasilia, 30 August 2023 (TDI): Denmark has signalled its dedication to the global fight against climate change by donating 150 million Danish kroner to the Amazon Fund.

This donation, pending parliamentary approval, marks a significant stride towards supporting initiatives that curb deforestation, safeguard biodiversity, enhance the quality of life for local communities, and advance sustainable development in Brazil.

The announcement was made during a meeting between the Brazilian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, and the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, Dan Jørgensen on 29 August.

Both ministers reiterated their commitment to combating climate change, promoting a just and inclusive ecological transition, and intensifying efforts to stop and reverse biodiversity loss, combat deforestation and desertification, and restore degraded lands.

Both ministers recognized the impact of climate change on forests, local communities, and Indigenous Peoples and emphasized the importance of creating conditions for sustainable forest management, promoting the trade of sustainably produced forest products, and ensuring that policies aimed at reducing deforestation consider social and economic challenges.

Minister Jørgensen praised Brazil’s recent efforts in forest restoration, sustainable forest management, and effective deforestation combat.

He acknowledged the crucial role of the Amazon Fund as a robust and transparent payment-for-results mechanism with solid governance and technical-scientific rigour in supporting Brazil’s efforts to end deforestation and promote sustainable forest management.

Minister Marina Silva expressed her gratitude to Minister Dan Jørgensen and the Danish government for their significant contribution to the Amazon Fund.

She highlighted that the donation would support the Brazilian government’s efforts to end deforestation in the Amazon by 2030 and promote sustainable development in the Amazon region.

Established in 2008, the Amazon Fund was reactivated in January after a four-year suspension due to the previous government’s decision to disband its Steering Committee (COFA).

The fund supports projects and initiatives contributing to deforestation reduction, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development in the Amazon region.
