Dar Engages With ASEAN Envoys Before Key ARF Meeting

Islamabad (TD): The ASEAN Heads of Missions of member states in Pakistan including Myanmar, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia called on the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, ahead of his trip to attend the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum’s (ARF) Ministerial Meeting later this week. 

Senator Ishaq Dar emphasized the significance of further strengthening ties in different areas, such as trade, tourism, connectivity, information and communication technology, and education.

He emphasized Pakistan’s geostrategic role and its growing digital economy as strengths for increased cooperation with the ASEAN countries. He also emphasized Pakistan’s endorsement of ASEAN’s vital role in promoting peace, development, and economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Heads of Missions acknowledge the value of historic cooperation between Pakistan and ASEAN and its member states and express a collective commitment towards further development of regional cooperation.

They welcomed Pakistan’s positive engagement in the ASEAN scheme of things, especially through its membership of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) since 1994. 

Pakistan has played a significant role in facilitating regional engagement on political and security matters, and strengthening of stronger institutional linkages in the region. 

As a preeminent regional organization in Asia, ASEAN plays a central role in promoting multilateral cooperation, and Pakistan is committed to playing its part in this collective vision.

The meeting was a timely exchange of perspectives before the 32nd ARF Ministerial Meeting, where regional peace, connectivity, and sustainable development will be high on the agenda. 

The two sides shared an interest in how to further enhance ASEAN-Pakistan relations and establish a forward-looking partnership that serves the people of the region.

The visit was another milestone in Pakistan’s increasing diplomatic outreach to Southeast Asia and reaffirmed its active promotion of multilateralism and regional stability.
