Danish Foreign Minister Response to US Greenland Envoy Appointment

Denmark (TDI): Denmark has reacted strongly to a recent US diplomatic move involving Greenland, urging Washington to respect its territorial integrity and sovereignty after the appointment of a US special envoy to the strategically important Arctic territory.

The controversy began when US President Donald Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, a semiautonomous region that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The appointment, which Trump framed as reflecting continued American interest in the island’s strategic value, prompted concern in Copenhagen and Nuuk about US intentions.

Although the United States described the envoy role as focused on security interests, Danish officials made clear that territorial sovereignty is non-negotiable.

Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasized that all countries, including the US, must respect “the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” a principle rooted in international law.

Rasmussen also said Denmark would summon the US ambassador in Copenhagen for discussions on the matter.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen strongly reiterated on Monday their opposition to any US attempts to claim Greenland.

They emphasized, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, and the US has no right to take over the island, not even under the guise of international security.”

Nielsen added that while Trump’s announcement “sounds significant, it does not change anything for us. We decide our own future,” highlighting Greenland’s autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Denmark’s strong response reflects lingering tensions over Arctic geopolitics and recent US interest in the resource rich region.

Trump has previously spoken publicly about the strategic importance of Greenland, which has large mineral deposits and a key location in the North Atlantic.

The episode has drawn attention across Europe as well. The European Union reaffirmed its longstanding position that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark is essential and should be respected by all nations.

For Denmark, a longstanding NATO ally of the United States, the incident underscores the delicate balance between cooperation and defending national sovereignty, particularly in geopolitically sensitive regions like the Arctic.
