Czech Mountaineer Dies During Nanga Parbat Summit

Chilas (TDI): Klára Kolouchová, a legendary Czech climber and the first woman from the Czech Republic to summit Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga, died while attempting to ascend Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest mountain.

Kolouchová reportedly fell from a height between Camp One and Camp Two on the treacherous slopes of Nanga Parbat. The incident was confirmed by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Diamir, Nizamuddin.

A search operation involving high-altitude helicopters and rescue personnel is currently underway, though authorities have acknowledged the serious challenges posed by the mountain’s extreme terrain and altitude.

Known as the “Killer Mountain,” Nanga Parbat stands at 8,125 meters (26,660 feet) and is infamous for its steep slopes and high fatality rate.

Kolouchová had previously summited five 8,000-meter peaks and was regarded as an inspirational figure in the global climbing community. Tragically, her quest to add Nanga Parbat to her list of accomplishments remained unfulfilled.

In 2023, a Spanish climber also lost his life during an expedition on Nanga Parbat, highlighting the continuing danger associated with high-altitude mountaineering in the region.

Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, expressed deep sorrow over Kolouchová’s passing.

“We are devastated by the loss of Klára Kolouchová, an extraordinary mountaineer who had conquered some of the world’s highest peaks,” Haidri stated.

“She was an inspiration to climbers worldwide. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and the global climbing community during this heartbreaking time.”

The Alpine Club of Pakistan is actively coordinating with local authorities to support the ongoing recovery mission.

Kolouchová’s career was marked by historic achievements and unparalleled determination. As the first Czech woman to summit Everest and K2, she shattered barriers and inspired a generation of female climbers.

Her legacy will endure not only through her accomplishments but also through the courage and passion she brought to every expedition.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by mountaineers and the respect nature commands, especially on the world’s highest peaks.
