Corbyn Forms Pro-Palestine UK Parliamentary Group

-

London, 3 September 2024 (TDI): Former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has formed a new pro-Palestinian parliamentary alliance.
The alliance includes four independent MPs—Shockat Adam, Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, and Iqbal Mohamed—who were elected on a pro-Palestine platform in July’s general election.

The group, named the Independent Alliance, will join Corbyn in the House of Commons, positioning itself as a notable faction alongside Reform UK and the Democratic Unionist Party, and with a slightly larger presence than the Green Party.

Alliance to Challenge Austerity Measures

In addition to advocating for the Palestinian cause, the alliance aims to challenge austerity measures, the two-child benefit cap, and UK arms sales to Israel.

The five independents have called for more MPs to join their cause, asserting that their election represents a mandate to oppose government policies they view as unjust.

The alliance, which operates without a designated leader, seeks to offer a robust alternative to current policies and practices, emphasizing issues such as austerity and inequality.

The formation of this alliance is expected to intensify scrutiny on Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding Britain’s stance on Israel.

In July, Labour suspended seven MPs for backing a Scottish National Party motion to eliminate the two-child benefit cap.

The Independent Alliance may seek to engage these suspended MPs, who were once allies of Corbyn, in its efforts.
