Container Traffic Through China-Kazakhstan Terminal in Xi’an Surge

Xi’an (TDI): The new Kazakhstan-China terminal has shown significant results since its launch. The volume of container traffic from China along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) increased 33 times last year.

In May 2023, the President of Kazakhstan launched the construction of this terminal in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province in northwestern China, and in February 2024 the terminal became functional.

The city of Xi’an is a transit hub in China, and its dry port is the largest in the country. More than 30 percent of container trains heading to the EU pass through Xi’an. About 40% of imports from the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) countries go to Xi’an.

Today, the terminal has a capacity of 133,000 TEU per year. Over the past year, the volume of transit shipments through this center exceeded 276,000 tons (about 23 thousand TEUs were processed and shipped).

In just 4 months of 2025, 10,524 TEUs (126,288 tons) were shipped and processed, and by 2030 it is planned to increase this figure to 83 thousand TEUs per year.

An integrated approach ensures ease of delivery for customers and makes it possible to use first and last mile technologies – from door to door.

The main partners-shippers are the largest manufacturers of cars and their components BYD, Geely, Chery, Hongqi, as well as electronic equipment and equipment, metal products, and shippers of consolidated cargo.
