Bogotá, (TDI): On Wednesday, Colombia and the United Arab Emirates reached an agreement to install three strategic data centres in Santa Marta, Colombia as a part of the BioNube Initiative.
The project will receive an energy capacity of up to 30 Mega Watts, and InterNexa will ensure the connectivity of this initiative. The total investment for BioNubes will exceed $80 million.
The following initiative primarily seeks to strengthen the security and sovereignty of state data through the establishment of a sovereign cloud that maintains elevated standards of governance and protection of the Colombian state.
The data centres will be created and operated by UAE-based technology and innovation companies in partnership with Colombian Organizations.
The Presidencia Colombia, the official X account of President Gustavo Petro wrote,
“The objective is to guarantee the sovereignty and security of state data, consolidating a sovereign cloud with high standards of governance and protection.”
The President of Colombia Gustavo Petro further wrote on X,

BioNube is a joint initiative between Colombia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to develop a network of data centres and cloud services in Colombia.
The purpose is to create a digital hub that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and economic growth in Colombia and the Latin American region.
Colombia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are partnering on this initiative to promote bilateral trade and investment, as well as knowledge sharing and cooperation in the fields of technology and innovation.
