COAS Warns of Evolving Threats to Global Peace

Islamabad (TDI): Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has said that global peace today is confronted with ever evolving threats and challenges.

General Asim Munir was addressing the 28th Annual Conference of International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centre (IAPTC), hosted for the first time in Pakistan at the Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS), NUST in Islamabad from 4-8 November 2024 on Monday.

In his key note address, the COAS stressed that despite the numerous peacekeeping activities underway by the UN and other organizations, the plight of innocent Kashmiris and Palestinians serve as a stark reminder that still a lot needs to be done.

Addressing the event, Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to United Nation peacekeeping and multilateralism, pledging full support to reform and strengthen the peacekeeping for a safer, more stable world.

Guest of Honour, Jean Pierre Lacroix acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to UN Peacekeeping Operations and appreciated Pakistan for hosting the 28th IAPTC Annual Conference.

The event officially commenced with the inauguration of new CIPS building by the COAS.

The opening ceremony was attended by Under Secretary General, Department of Peace Operations, Jean Pierre Lacroix, United Nation’s Police Advisor, Acting Deputy Military Advisor, Foreign Sectary of Pakistan and Rector NUST.

Pakistan is one of the world top country contributing to UN peacekeeping operations globally.

According to Foreign Office, With an illustrious history of UN peacekeeping spanning over six decades, Pakistani peacekeepers, both men and women, have been at the forefront of international efforts to end conflicts and restore order across many regions of the world.

Over 235,000 Pakistani UN peacekeepers have served with distinction in 48 UN peacekeeping missions, with Pakistan consistently retaining the position of one of the top troop-contributing countries (TCCs) at the UN.

To date, 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, protecting civilians and upholding the UN peacekeeping mandates in the process.
