-

New York, 27 October 2021 (TDI): The president of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, delivered a speech, at the Assembly. The meeting was on 26 October. The Secretary-General also addressed the Member States. Shahid stated the realities of the impact of the climate, like rising sea levels.

Shahid then added that only concrete actions will solve climate change. He remarked that the meeting was only to remind people what the world is capable of if they act together. Shahid reaffirmed that scientists are not wrong about the causes of climate change.

Valérie Masson-Delmotte stated that human activities have warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land. Delmotte is part of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change, and was present at the meeting, online. This Panel is the body that has published reports.

DELMOTTE FINAL STATEMENT AND GUTERRES SPEECH

Delmotte then added that climate change is already affecting every region of the Earth. She mentions that the impacts are clear, like how the heatwaves, droughts, fires, have increased. The Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, addressed the UNGA, where he stated the objective of the UN.

The UN, and its Assembly, were created so that countries could unite to address common crises, like climate change. Guterres then added that COP26 will be important because the actions currently taken are not enough.

Guterres also referred to the goal of limiting celsius degrees rise, as the only liveable future. He called the Member States to assist the COP26. The UN chief stated that there is no more time for diplomacy. He then urged the governments, especially those in the G20 to lead the effort.

Guterres also stressed that everyone has a role in achieving a future of cleaner energy sources. He called the citizens to make more responsible choices. Guterres motivated the younger generations to keep demanding actions from their leaders.

The Secretary then underlined the need for solidarity. For this, Guterres urged the richer countries to keep their respective financing commitment, for developing nations. Then he called for donors to devote at least 50% of their climate support, to resilience.

KELAPILE STATEMENT

The President of the UN Economic and Social Council, Collen Kelapile, pronounced this. Kelapile stated that climate action and sustainable development must go hand-in-hand. He underlined that everyone must be part of the net-zero future.

Kelapile added that to address climate change, global transformation must be just, inclusive; and equitable to ensure that no one is left behind. He remarked that especially women, children, youth, indigenous people, and displaced populations should not be left behind.

Finally, Kelapile stressed the need for countries to invest in reskilling affected workers, and in economic diversification. He also joined the Secretary-General to call for greater support from the countries.
