Chinese official meets with Maltese leaders


Valletta, 8 December 2021 (TDI): Yang Jiechi, the Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs met with the Maltese President and Prime Minister.

Maltese President George Vella and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela welcomed Yang Jiechi in Malta. Yang Jiechi discussed bilateral relations with the Maltese leaders. He emphasized that the two countries mutually respect each other and treat equally. The two sides reassured support for issues of concern of both states.

In the meeting, the two sides discussed enhancing cooperation in different fields especially in the Chinese project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Yang Jiechi stated that BRI will help Malta in its social and economic development.

Yang Jiechi expressed gratitude to Maltese President George Vella for supporting China in the forthcoming Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022.

The two Maltese leaders appreciated the Chinese achievements in its development in a very short time. They also congratulated on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.

The two leaders emphasized the expanding cooperation between the two sides. They expressed their support for the One-China principle by reaffirming that Malta follows the policies of mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of the other states. They also stressed that Malta firmly supports the China-European Union (EU) relations. Malta will make efforts to create new channels to strengthen the China-EU cooperation, they added.

China and Malta will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in the coming year. The two states have strengthened their relations since the establishment of the ties by enhancing communication between the two sides.
