Beijing, 7 July 2021 (TDI): Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense, Wei Fenghe had a virtual meeting with German Defense Minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, on Tuesday.

The limitations imposed because of the Covid-19 pandemic have forced the governments as well as other entities to utilize digital means for communications. Consequently, digital diplomacy is the new norm.

The agenda of the virtual meet-up between the two sides was to discuss various issues ahead of the cruise of a German frigate. The German frigate will sail through the South China Sea, next month. This will be the first-ever voyage through the region since 2002.

Chinese Defense Minister mentioned that the China-Germany strategic relationship has seen constant and stable development in recent years. He also expressed on behalf of his country that China hopes Germany would continue to join hands with them in upholding multilateralism as well as safeguarding international justice.

Minister Wei Fenghe also communicated that there is an increased need for bilateral military cooperation between the two partners. Such cooperation will ensure a strong and robust relationship between the two militaries, in the long run.

On the other hand, the German Defense Minister underscored that her country is willing to increase communication and increase trust with China. The two can collaborate to mutually deal with the regional as well as global issues and challenges like climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer also lauded the development achievements of China over the years. Ever since, the two partners have had mutually beneficial and strong trade and economic ties.

China and Germany have long-standing and historic ties that can be traced back to the nineteenth century. The relationship has profound strategic as well as economic contours. China has been the largest trading partner of Germany since 2015. The two partners hold regular intergovernmental consultations.
