New York, 2 August 2022 (TDI): Chinese Ambassador to UN, Zhang Jun, called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Chinese envoy held the meeting after holding charge of UNSC’s presidency for August.

He briefed the Secretary-General on the Council’s program of work in August. He reaffirmed China’s support for multilateralism.
Chinese ambassador to the UN further appreciated the diplomatic efforts of the Secretary-General for peace and security.
Briefing on China’s work plans for its rotating presidency in August
Chinese ambassador stated that the world is facing wide-range challenges. These include political turmoils, military conflicts, and terrorist threats. It further adds COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, energy crisis, food crisis, and many others.
Ambassador Zhang stressed that China attaches great importance to its Presidency of the Security Council.
He stated that China would uphold the true spirit of multilateralism and strengthen communication and consultation with Council members and all other parties. China will earnestly perform its presidential duties.
He also highlighted that China has proposed to hold a briefing on August 22. The theme will be “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Promote Common Security through Dialogue and Cooperation.”
Chinese envoy significantly mentioned that the security of all countries is indivisible. One country’s security cannot be built on the insecurity of others.
Remarks over Africa’s capacity building and ongoing global conflicts
Ambassador Zhang highlighted that to help Africa, efforts must go beyond humanitarian aid and focus on economic development.
The core is to strengthen Africa’s capacity-building. China has proposed to hold an open debate on August 8 on the theme of “Peace and Security in Africa: Capacity Building for Sustaining Peace.”
He further mentioned the crucial need for mediation efforts for the political settlement of hotspot issues. He highlighted the ongoing conflict in Yemen, Libya, Ukraine, and Haiti.
China will work together with other Council members and Secretary-General to set up diplomatic efforts and political settlements to resolve disputes.
He also shared his remarks on growing global warming and climate change, the 10th Review Conference of the NPT, AUKUS, North Korea’s nuclear issue, the export of Ukraine grains, and global food security.
