Beijing, 30 August 2024 (TDI): China’s average life expectancy has reached a record high of 78.6 years, while the maternal mortality rate has dropped to 15.1 per 100,000 and the infant mortality rate to 4.5 per 1,000, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).
The NHC released the 2023 statistical bulletin on the country’s health services, indicating significant improvements in public health and the high-quality development of the healthcare sector.
As of the end of 2023, the number of medical and health institutions nationwide reached 1,070,785, including 38,355 hospitals, with a total of 10.174 million hospital beds — an increase of 424,000 from the previous year.

The total number of health professionals rose to 12.488 million, with 7.723 million working in hospitals. Medical service volume and efficiency also showed parallel growth, with 9.55 billion medical consultations and treatments recorded nationwide in 2023, an increase of 1.13 billion from the previous year.
There were over 301 million admissions, up by 55.011 million.
Preliminary estimates indicate that total health expenditure in China for 2023 was over 9 trillion yuan ($1.27 trillion), with government expenditure accounting for 26.7%, social expenditure 46%, and personal expenditure 27.3%. The per capita health expenditure was 6,425.3 yuan, representing 7.2% of GDP.
The number of consultations and treatments in traditional Chinese medicine reached 1.54 billion in 2023, an increase of 310 million from the previous year, reflecting growing integration of traditional practices with modern healthcare.
