Beijing, 6 April 2023 (TDI): On Thursday, Mao Ning, a Spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned Tsai Ing-wen’s trip to the United States (US).

Despite previous warnings, the US still allowed a high-profile meeting between Tsai and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the third-highest-ranking official in the US government.

During her visit, Tsai also met with several US officials and congressional members. Mao criticized the US for providing Tsai with a platform to make separatist remarks about Taiwan’s independence.

She also stated that the US worked with Taiwan’s leaders and supported separatist efforts for Taiwan’s independence, such as participating in politics on US soil, having official meetings between the US and Taiwan & improving the relationship between the two countries.

She warned that such acts violate the “One-China” principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqué, which could intensify separatist incentives.

The Taiwan issue is extremely important to China and is the most significant limit in China-US relations. The US has recently violated its own promise by using Taiwan to confront China.

The approach of the US regarding Taiwan includes official meetings, selling weapons, working with Taiwan’s military, and helping Taiwan gain more recognition internationally.

These actions go against the “One-China” principle and may worsen China-US relations. Finally, Mao urged the US to follow the “One-China” principle and not support “Taiwan independence,” “two Chinas,” or “one China, one Taiwan.”

Supporting Taiwan’s independence has been a common approach of the US to contain China, however, she called on the US to stop allowing official meetings, improving relationships with Taiwan, and creating problems with China.
