China, UK Discuss Strengthening Ties

Beijing (TDI): Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Beijing on Friday, with both sides expressing a commitment to deepening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation on a range of global issues.

Wang emphasized that China and the UK, as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and major global economies, should play a leading role in upholding the UN-centered international order.

He stressed the importance of working together to address global challenges and fostering mutual development.

Highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two nations, Wang noted that China-UK relations are at a new starting point.

He pointed out that the British Labour government’s proposal for a stable and strategically significant relationship with China aligns with both countries’ needs and the broader international landscape.

He reiterated China’s willingness to work with the UK to deepen strategic communication, enhance practical cooperation, and elevate the relationship to a new stage of stable growth.

On sensitive issues, Wang reaffirmed China’s stance on Taiwan and Hong Kong, calling them internal affairs and urging non-interference.

He underscored that both sides should respect each other’s core concerns, strengthen dialogue, and create a conducive atmosphere for collaboration.

Wang also outlined China’s readiness to fully restore dialogue and cooperation across various sectors, including trade, finance, green development, science and technology, health, education, and culture.

He highlighted the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships and China’s broader commitment to multilateralism, international fairness, and open development.

Lammy, for his part, conveyed the British government’s intention to manage differences with China respectfully and in a manner that serves both nations’ long-term interests.

UK’s Commitment to Policy on Taiwan

He reiterated the UK’s commitment to its longstanding policy on Taiwan, in place since the establishment of diplomatic ties with China.

The British foreign secretary expressed hope for expanded cooperation in critical areas such as climate change, energy, technology, and international development.

Lammy also called for joint efforts to uphold free trade and tackle geopolitical crises through diplomatic channels, in line with their shared responsibilities as members of the UN Security Council.

Both officials voiced optimism about embarking on a renewed journey of stronger UK-China relations in the coming years.
