China Seeks EU Tariffs Resolution

Beijing, (TDI): China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani to discuss the European Union’s ongoing anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles (EVs).

During the meeting, Wang emphasized the importance of resolving economic and trade differences between China and the EU through dialogue and consultation, in line with the consensus reached by the leaders of both sides, according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce.

Wang expressed China’s disappointment at the European Commission’s (EC) rejection of a proposed solution from Beijing, criticizing the EC for lacking the political will to address the issue through negotiation.

The investigation into Chinese EV subsidies is seen as a critical challenge in China-EU economic relations.
Wang’s meetings also included discussions with Italy’s Industry Minister, Adolfo Urso, and Roberto Vavassori, President of the Italian Association of the Automotive Industry.

Beijing’s Commitment to Resolve Dispute

Analysts in China believe these interactions reflect Beijing’s commitment to resolving the dispute through diplomacy ahead of Wang’s upcoming talks with EC Executive Vice President and Trade Commissioner, Valdis Dombrovskis, on September 19.

Chinese commentators have voiced concerns that the investigation, along with potential tariffs on Chinese EVs, could heighten tensions between the two major trading partners.
They urged the EU to avoid unilateral actions and focus on dialogue to prevent further escalation.

Cui Hongjian, a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, noted that while the EC’s tariff plans may appeal to certain EU bureaucrats, they do not necessarily align with the broader interests of individual member states.

He stressed that both sides must work towards a consensus to prevent a “lose-lose” outcome, especially given the EU’s growing perception of China as a competitor.
Earlier this month, China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the EC’s approach, accusing it of insincerity following its rejection of Beijing’s proposed resolution.
China remains firm in its commitment to protecting the interests of its companies.

Wang’s visit to Europe comes amid growing calls for a negotiated settlement on the issue.

Notably, Spain, which had initially supported the EC’s tariff plans, has shifted its stance and is now reconsidering its position.

Meanwhile, Germany is reportedly lobbying other EU nations to oppose tariffs on Chinese EVs, according to media reports.
