Beijing, 5 April 2024 (TDI): China reaffirmed its commitment to stabilizing the situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. This was during a UN Security Council briefing held in New York on April 4, 2024.

Geng emphasized China’s commitment to advancing peace through “multiple channels,” saying, “As a friendly neighbor of Myanmar, China has been closely following the developments in the Rakhine State.”
Addressing the briefing, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, emphasized China’s constructive role in promoting peace and stability in the conflict-affected region.
Highlighting the recent escalation of fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Geng stressed that the conflict is an internal matter for Myanmar.

In addition to this, he urged the international community to respect Myanmar’s sovereignty. He also facilitated the dialogue among the parties involved.
As a friendly neighbor of Myanmar, China has actively monitored developments in Rakhine State. It has deployed diplomatic efforts. These include a current delegation in Myanmar. He talked about mediating and communicating toward a peaceful resolution.
China expressed appreciation for Bangladesh’s support for refugees from Rakhine State. He recognized the challenges of repatriation efforts.
Moreover, Geng emphasized China’s commitment to assisting both Myanmar and Bangladesh. The reason was to resolve the repatriation issue.
Rejecting proposed sanctions on Myanmar, Geng advocated for dialogue. Moreover, it includes mutual understanding and trust-building measures.
The aim is to create a conducive environment for repatriation and conflict resolution. He also praised the positive progress made by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in engaging Myanmar and providing humanitarian aid.
China’s policy of friendship extends to all people in Myanmar. There is a focus on stability, development, and well-being. Geng urged continued international support for ASEAN’s leadership, emphasizing respect for the “ASEAN way” of solidarity and dialogue.
