Nay Pyi Taw, 3 May 2023 (TDI): On Tuesday, China and Myanmar agreed to further promote the comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two countries.

At the meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing and Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang exchanged views regarding their bilateral relations.

Qin said that China and Myanmar, being neighbours, share a “Paukphaw” (fraternal) friendship; therefore, China has attached great importance to its relations with Myanmar.

Having that said, he then shared the vision of China joining hands with Myanmar and building a China-Myanmar community with a shared future.

Moreover, he also reiterated China’s willingness to take the lead in implementing the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative in the China-Myanmar community.

To help Myanmar achieve stability and national development, China would always support Myanmar in exploring development paths feasible for its current national condition.

In addition to this, China also supports Myanmar in advancing its political transition process and endorses the efforts of relevant parties in the country to handle their differences and pursue national reconciliation within the bounds of the constitutional and legal framework.

He further added that the countries of the international community, on their behalf, should refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of Myanmar. Rather, they should play a constructive role in helping Myanmar achieve peace and reconciliation.

Furthermore, there is a developmental project between the two countries named China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) that aims to improve infrastructure and increase economic cooperation between China and Myanmar.

Regarding the project, Qin said that China would continue to support Myanmar’s development by assisting with key projects in the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, adding that, China will implement various projects related to agriculture, education, and healthcare for the benefit of the people of Myanmar.

China-Myanmar-Bangladesh pragmatic cooperation

In recent years, Myanmar-Bangladesh relations have been marked by tension and conflict.

The two countries share a border that is often disputed, and there have been longstanding concerns about the treatment of the Rohingya people, a Muslim minority group that has faced persecution and violence in Myanmar.

To ease the tension between both countries, China supports Myanmar in enhancing its relations with Bangladesh and resolving related issues through consultation and table talks.
