China, Japan Foreign Ministers Discuss Issues

New York, (TDI): Chinese and Japanese senior diplomats met to discuss recent bilateral issues, including Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima plant and the case of a Japanese student attacked in Shenzhen, China.

In high-level talks, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa emphasized the importance of cooperation in strengthening bilateral ties.

Wang urged Tokyo to maintain its commitments on international monitoring of the Fukushima water discharge and refrain from politicizing the issue.
He also reassured that China would investigate the attack on the Japanese student and ensure the safety of all foreign nationals in the country.

Observers noted that these diplomatic engagements allow both nations to clarify their positions and address public concerns over sensitive issues.

Kamikawa expressed Japan’s desire to foster stable relations with China, advocating for continuous dialogue to safeguard regional peace.

Meanwhile, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong raised concerns over Japan’s actions during recent Quad and US-Japan summits, urging Tokyo to adhere to the one-China principle and avoid stirring tensions in the South China Sea.

Sun also extended condolences to the family of the Japanese student and underscored that the incident should not be exaggerated for political gain.

Experts warn that sensationalized media coverage of the Shenzhen incident could strain China-Japan relations, with some Japanese political figures using the case to amplify discord.

Despite this, most Chinese citizens expressed shock and sympathy toward the victim, while urging calm and rational discourse.

Diplomatic interactions continue as both sides strive to manage differences and promote stability in the region.
